Environment and Sustainability
Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword or a token gesture to me. Sustainable, thoughtful working practices are how we ensure that our world is fit to inherit by future generations. I take a number of steps to make my small business as eco-friendly as I can, and to produce made-to-last jewellery which if cared for well, will last a lifetime and beyond. I am always looking out for new ways to commit to this ethic and love to hear ideas from my customers and community. Some of the initiatives I’ve prioritised right from the get-go include:
- Sustainable energy supply: My energy supplier is purposefully chosen due to its 100% renewable characteristics, and no greenwashing here – I’ve checked them out properly and it’s renewable from source – none of those REGO certificates on my watch! In addition, the workshop uses LED lighting wherever possible, and equipment is switched off when not in use.
- Eco friendly packaging. Without compromising on quality and sophisticated design, all of my packaging is carefully thought out, from the compostable envelopes, to my FSC approved linen-look presentation boxes.
- Sourcing locally and encouraging fair working conditions: I buy as much inventory as I can from within the Mainland UK, including recycled precious metals, gemstones, minerals, and well engineered equipment for the workshop. I manage my inventory to minimise unnecessary postal carriage, and I buy a lot of my gemstones from reputable suppliers in London’s Hatton Garden and the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter, so that I can be sure of their authenticity and credentials regarding fair (or zero) mining practices.
- Recycled or repurposed alternative media: Some of my pieces incorporate mixed media, such as leather, wooden veneer, or acrylic. Wherever possible, these are recycled goods, or offcuts which would otherwise go to landfill.
- Recycling waste materials. As little as possible goes to landfill from my studio. This includes packaging, raw materials, chemical waste and scrap metals. Scrap metals are carefully collected and recycled, including waste metals in soluble compounds, which are neutralised before being taken to the appropriate waste disposal or recycling point.
